LEHIGHTON—
The Blue Mountain Health System is pleased to announce that is now provides digital mammography. The
Gnaden
Huetten
Memorial
Hospital campus now features the state-of-the-art system, Selenia™ digital mammography from Hologic™. Digital mammography incorporates revolutionary imaging technology that provides incredibly sharp breast images.
“We are very excited to be able to offer the newest technology for breast cancer detection,” says Lois Richards, director of Imaging Services for the health system. Digital mammography is different from conventional mammography in how the images of the breast is acquired and, more importantly, viewed. The radiologist can magnify the images, increase or decrease the contrast and invert the black and white values while reading the images.
Digital mammography offers a number of other practical advantages and patient conveniences. “Because the images appear directly on the technologist’s monitor in a matter of seconds, there is no waiting for film to develop, which means less time in the breast imaging suite for patients,” says Richards. It also reduces the need for repeat exams due to under or over exposure of films and the images are easily stored and transferred electronically, eliminating the dependency on one set of original films.
“By offering women the latest technology in mammography, we hope to increase the number of area women who follow recommendations for regular screenings.” says Richards.
The Blue Mountain Health System offers a Mammography Voucher Program, which provides free mammograms to women who have no insurance or are under-insured from the
Carbon
County and surrounding area. To be eligible for a free mammogram, women do need to have a prescription from their physician. For more information about the program, call (610) 377-7033.
