Using very small amounts of radioactive isotope to diagnose-and sometimes treat-disease, nuclear scans can be performed on the brain, heart, lungs, thyroid, kidneys, gall bladder, liver and bones. These scans can detect a wide variety of diseases such as cancer, heart disease and arthritis. Images and readings are taken with special equipment which does not emit any radiation. The studies, which are interpreted by a radiologist trained in nuclear medicine, are performed by a certified technologist.
