Helping you achieve a better nights sleep and a better quality of life.
The Sleep Disorders Center of Blue Mountain Health System offers comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and treatment for a wide variety of sleep disorders in a comfortable atmosphere that looks and feels more like home than a hospital. The center diagnoses the following conditions:
- obstructive sleep apnea
- circadian rhythm sleep disorders, caused by shift work syndrome
- irregular sleep/wake patterns
- advanced or delayed sleep phase syndrome
- periodic limb movement disorder, commonly referred to as “restless leg”
The effect of lack of sleep on a person’s health has, up to now, largely been ignored. Sleep disruption can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, mood disorders and other medical problems. If a sleep disorder is the cause of these problems it can be treated at the source, instead of merely treating the symptoms.
For example, while snoring is an annoyance, it may be a symptom of sleep apnea , a condition that can kill you. Sleep apnea is interrupted breathing during sleep caused when your throat muscles relax too much, creating airway blockages that can last up to a minute. When the throat closes, the heart and brain are deprived of oxygen until you wake up enough to start breathing again. This can happen up to 100 times a night.
If either you or your partner are not getting a good night’s sleep, call the sleep disorders center. The Sleep Disorders Center is located at the Palmerton campus of the Blue Mountain Health System. For more information, please call 610-826-1312.
